Now that's what I call an ad

The My Chemical Toilet site published a report that the first UK compilation of Now That's What I Call Music is going to be reissued on CD next week. This compilation includes Tracey's version of "They Don't Know". And in a bit of a treat, they posted a link to a YouTube video of a vintage ad for the original LP set, with voiceover courtesy of Trace. And in even more of a treat, I'm going to link to it here:

Happy holidays/anniversary/birthday!

As we approach the end of 2008, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I also want to wish Tracey and Allan a happy anniversary, and this year is a significant one: it's their 25th anniversary. And finally, I want to wish Tracey a happy birthday next Tuesday (30th) -- "Jack Benny plus 10", you could say.

And let's not forget another milestone anniversary coming in February/March, but more about that one later....

Which Tale: Despereaux or Desperation?

I saw The Tale of Despereaux this past Sunday. I saw it at the Cineplex Odeon cinemas in Windsor, Ontario's Devonshire Mall. Given that I picked the weekend with the coldest weather of the season to take a short trip across the border, I didn't think making a trip to Point Pelee National Park was a good idea. Staying inside was an excellent idea. Besides, by going to the first showing of the day, I avoided listening to the broadcast of the Detroit Lions attempting to play the New Orleans Saints and pick up their first win of the season. You could call it The Tale of Desperation!

And what did I think of Tracey's work in Despereaux? She does her usual fine job in voicing the character of servant girl Miggery Sow, who dreams of being a princess (sentiments not shared by the one who gives her voice!). It was a good way to pass the afternoon. And after I heard the score of the Lions game (35 to 7 in favor of New Orleans, en route to an eventual 42-7 triumph), I knew I had made the right decision.

No SAG'ing on the job

Awards season continues -- fresh off of winning two Golden Satellite Awards for State of the Union, Tracey's just been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award, also for State of the Union. Her competition: Christina Applegate, Samantha Who?; America Ferrera, Ugly Betty; Tina Fey, 30 Rock; Mary-Louise Parker, Weeds.

The awards will be handed out January 25 and will be on both TBS and TNT (why on both?)

Yes, The Satellite Awards

In a previous post, I had mentioned the Satellite Awards, which I'd never heard of before, and noted that Tracey was up for two of them, an acting award for State of the Union and a Best Comedy Series award, also for State of the Union. Well, she won them both, so congratulations!

A few items of note

As we approach the end of the year, here are a few items I've noticed in the news:

  • The Hollywood Reporter reported on the recent event at the Paley Center in LA that honored Carl Reiner and Showtime. Tracey was there to help honor Showtime, and she made an observation about The Tudors -- quoting: "attending school as a youngster in England, she believed that King Henry VIII was 'fat and bald. But when he's being brought to you in the 21st century by premium cable, he's Jonathan Rhys Meyers.'" The truth wouldn't have been as much fun....
  • The Tale of Despereaux is opening on Friday, and the buzz appears to be good. Some promo clips and behind-the-scenes clips have appeared on YouTube, legitimately or otherwise....
  • Tedd Thomey passed away earlier this month. What was his connection with Tracey? Well, he was the author (in the "as told to" sense) of The Big Love, the book that led to the 1991 Broadway play that starred Trace.
  • And in 2 weeks, there will be important birthdays and anniversaries approaching (more on those later)

The Satellite Awards (?)

For what it's worth...

The International Press Academy announced its nominations for the 13th annual Satellite Awards, covering the best in film, television and videogames.  I must confess that I'd never heard of them before.  Of most interest to us here, State of the Union has been nominated for Best Television Series, Comedy or Musical (the competition: It's Always Something in Philadelphia, 30 Rock, Pushing Daisies, The Colbert Report, and Skins), while Tracey has been nominated for Best Actress in a Series, Comedy or Musical (her competition: Christina Applegate, Tina Fey, America Ferrera, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Mary Louise Parker).

The awards will be handed out on December 14.

Talk Show News

At long last, I've finally update my 2008 talk show appearances page to include a summary of Tracey's appearance on the Tonight Show back in April.  I've included my usual small frame grabs, but I've also put a pointer to a full-size HDTV screen capture which I think is rather flattering.  I've also put up my summary of her interview on Showtime's boxing matches last week.

And on November 21, she's scheduled to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Some items of note

Let's see what's been happening lately...

Tracey was interviewed between bouts at Showtime's recent fight card (November 1) that featured Vic Darchinyan and Cristian Mijares.  She mentioned that she'd just wrapped up 3 weeks of filming for State of the Union and would now be busy editing it for broadcast next year.  Several of the sketches had alternate endings filmed in anticipation of either Obama or McCain winning the election; now those McCain endings won't be used except as possible deleted scenes on a DVD set.  President-elect Obama was not among the 52 characters she will be portraying this season, but we will be seeing Laura Bush, Tom Brokaw and Tony Sirico.  And we also learned that, after 25 years in this country, she still doesn't understand American football.

State of the Union season 1 is still coming out on DVD next Tuesday (11th).  The Tale of Despereaux is still coming to a theater near you on December 19; Tracey is the voice of servant girl Mig.

Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me

CBS has commissioned a pilot for a TV version of the NPR panel show Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me. The pilot was shot yesterday (October 6) in LA, and occupying one of the spots on the panel was Tracey. One member of the audience who is a fan of the radio show posted on his blog that the adaptations of the format to commercial TV, along with the production requirements, detracted from his enjoyment of the program, although he speculated that the final edited product may be better. He was also critical of Tracey's performance on the panel; it seemed to him that she wasn't that familiar with the program and its format, although when she does become familiar with it, "she might actually become a great guest." Hopefully, we'll get the chance to see for ourselves if/when the pilot airs or the series is picked up.

While watching old game shows or panel shows such as What's My Line and I've Got A Secret, I've occasionally wondered how Tracey would have done on those shows, as either a panelist or a guest. Unless someone revives those programs, we'll never know, but clearly others had similar thoughts and got her onto this pilot.
